Speed up your site by enabling Gzip compression
By setting up compression on your hosting, you should see an decrease in load times. Compression is where a file is 'squished' down in size before it is sent to the browser. It is quicker for a visitor to download a compressed version of your site and uncompress it as opposed to downloading the uncompressed version. This is just one quick and easy way to further optimise your site for your visitors.
The below guide will show you how to add compression specifically for your Squirrel Hosting account. However, if you are not hosted with us, the below guide may still work depending on how your server is set up.
Log in to your Squirrel Hosting account. Click on 'view / manage your hosting'.
Click on the 'eXtend control panel' icon for the hosting account that you wish to access.
Next, click on the 'File Manager' icon.
Locate and right click on your.htaccess file then click 'edit' (if you do not have a .htaccess file, click the new file icon at the top to create one).
Copy and paste the following code into the htaccess file:
# DEFLATE by type - html, text, css, xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/css text/xml
# DEFLATE by extension
AddOutputFilter DEFLATE js css htm html xml php
Click 'save and close'.
A window should pop up confirming that the file has been saved. Click ok and you will now have enabled compression.
