rename cms made simple admin

This short step by step guide will show you how to rename your CMS Made simple admin address. It is recommended you do this to help keep your site safe from hackers (even if you're running the latest version).

CMS Made Simple Change admin details : Advanced Guide

Below is the advanced users guide. For a more easy to understand guide, skip this and move to the simple guide below.

  1. Connect via FTP to your hosting.
  2. Navigate to your public directory (usually public_html or htdocs).
  3. Edit the permissions on config.php to full read and write access (usually 777).
  4. Open config.php for editing and after line 14 ( usually $config['default_encoding'] = 'utf-8'; ) add
    $config['admin_dir'] = 'NEW-ADMIN-FOLDER';
    before the closing ?>
    Change 'NEW-ADMIN-FOLDER' to what ever you want your admin folder to be e.g. 'erf93fcJ'.
  5. Save the file and upload it.
  6. Edit the permissions on config.php back to read only (usually 444 or 600).
  7. Rename your admin folder to match up with what you put in step 4.

CMS Made Simple Change admin details : Simple Guide

The following guide will show you how to rename your admin area if your CMS Made Simple website is hosted with Squirrel Hosting. If you're not with Squirrel Hosting, certain aspects of this guide will be different but you may still be able to follow most of the steps.

Step 1 : Log into your eXtend Control Panel

First step is to log into your Squirrel Hosting account and select 'manage web hosting' from the menu on the left. Once the page has loaded select 'load control panel' next to the domain name you have installed CMS Made Simple onto.

Step 2 : Changing permissions on config.php

In order for us to change the admin address we first need to edit a core file. By default our 1 click install system sets the config.php file to read only. This helps stop hackers from editing the file, unfortunately this also stops us from editing it. This means that we first need to change the permission on the file to read and write (777). To do this, click the 'file manager' icon whilst in eXtend.

file Manager

Once the file manager loads double click 'public_html'.

public_html

If you have installed CMS Made Simple in a folder then you will need to navigate into this folder by double clicking it.

If you're in the right folder, you should see the config.php file - right click on it and click Chmod.

CMS Made Simple Config.php edit permissions

In the popup box enter 777 in the mode box then click save.

Once complete, the number in the permissions column will have changed to 777.

Step 3 : Editing the config.php

Next right click again on config.php and click 'edit'.

Edit config.php

This will now open up the file for editing. What we now need to do is add the following line of code:

$config['admin_dir'] = 'NEW-ADMIN-FOLDER';

into the file after the line

$config['default_encoding'] = 'utf-8';

but before the line

?>

you will need to replace NEW-ADMIN-FOLDER with what you want your admin folder to be called. Please make a note of this as we will need it later.

Once you have added the new line of code, click the 'save' button.

Save config.php

You may then see a popup box appear informing you that the changes have been saved.

Config files saved

Step 4 : Re-setting the permissions of config.php

Next we need to reset the permissions on the file back to read only.

Right click on config.php and click Chmod.

Chmod config

You will see the Chmod popup box as before but this time we want to put 444 in (instead of 777).

Chmod CMS Made Simple config 444

Once complete the number under the permissions column should now be 444.

Step 5 : Rename the admin folder

The final step is to rename the admin folder.

Right click on the admin folder and click rename. Then in the popup box, enter the new name for the admin folder you made a note of earlier.

Rename CMS Made Easy Admin Folder

Once you've typed the new admin folder name in, click OK.

That's it, to get to your sites admin from now on you will need to visit your domain followed by the new admin folder. e.g. if you used to go to www.yourdomain.co.uk/admin you now go to www.yourdomainname.co.uk/NEW-ADMIN-FOLDER

Hope this helps all you CMS Made Easy users out there and if you ever need any help please feel free to submit a support ticket where we will do our best to help.
