How to install Vanilla Forums
Vanilla Forums is an open source community forum software. Vanilla forums is a very modern, fresh platform with the ability to incorporate features such as awards, reputation scores and social integration. You are also able to embed Vanilla Forums into any website.
The Squirrel Hosting installation process for Vanilla Forums is one of the quickest and easiest of all of our installs.
Our 1 click install software will only install to an empty directory. If your hosting account is new, make sure you have removed the default index.html. Failure to install in an empty directory will result in a blank page once you have attempted to run the install.
Step 1 Log in to eXtend
Log in to your eXtend control panel. For your username and password as well as details on how to do this, check your welcome email. You can also access your eXtend control panel via your customer control panel under 'manage your hosting'.
Step 2 Run the Vanilla Forums 1 click install
Once you have logged in to your control panel, scroll down and click on the Vanilla Forum symbol in the CGI scripts section.
After you have done this, a page will load stating 'choose an installation directory'. You will be given the choice of either installing Vanilla Forum to your root domain (example.com) or you can create a folder such as example.com/forum to install it too. If you wish to add a new folder, type the name of the folder you would like to create at the end of the file path next to 'installation directory' and click 'Install Now'. The software will create the folder for you and this will be where Vanilla Forums will be installed to. Alternatively, if you wish your install to remain in the root directory, you just need to click 'Install Now'.
Installation Complete! The CGI script has been installed to your directory. Our 1 click install has copied all the files and set up the database. Next, you will need to follow the setup procedure to customise your install. To do this, click on one of the links that is listed in the form of your domain.
After you have clicked this, a page will load saying 'Vanilla version 2 installer'. This page will ask you to fill in the following:
- Application Title (already filled in)
- Admin Email (email address of administrator)
- Admin Username (choose a username)
- Admin Password (choose a password)
- Confirm Password (input the same password)
After you have filled these in, click continue.
Congratulations! Vanilla forum is now fully installed. All you need to do now is customise your layout, create categories and manage users.
