Offer free content for download with Concrete5
You can offer free content to your users whether it be an e-book, music tracks or videos. In order to do this you may want to offer the downloadable content completely free via a direct download. Otherwise, you may wish to get the user to fill in some details on a form first before they can access the content.
Below we outline two ways in which you can offer your content to your users for free with Concrete 5.
Uploading your content to your concrete5 site
Log in to your Concrete5 website.
First of all, click on 'dashboard' in the top right corner of the page.
Next, click on 'file manager' in the top right corner.
The file manager page will load. After this, you will need to choose your downloadable file to upload. Do this by clicking 'choose file'. After you have selected the correct file, click 'upload file'.
An upload complete page will appear in a pop up box. Click 'continue' at the top of the box.
Your file will now have been added.
Allowing instant access to your file
This method is for if you don't want to ask your user for any information in exchange for the free product you have on offer.
First of all, you need to leave your dashboard and 'return to website'.
Create a Sub-Page
Hover over 'edit' in the top left corner and click 'add a sub page'.
Choose a page type from the pop up box. Select whichever you think will suit your page / website best.
Once you have chosen your page type, another page will load with a form to fill in. The fields are as follows:
Name - the name you will choose for your sub page (e-book, free download).
URL slug - this will be generated for you and shows you how the url for your page will look.
Public Date / Time - this shows the time and date that your page was created.
Description - you can enter a description of your page if you wish. This can help with searching and sums up what the page is for.
Click 'add page' after you have filled this in.
Next, you need to hover over 'editing' and click 'publish my edits'.
Your new sub page will now appear as part of your website (as below). Click on your new page.
You can now edit this page, add blocks etc. To edit the page, click 'edit' in the top left corner and click 'edit this page'.
Next, you need to click 'add to main' in order to add items to your page.
After this, click 'add block'.
A box will pop up with several options. For the purpose of this guide, we will show you what we would do in this instance. However, you can add any type of content from the options provided.
The 'add content' box will pop up. Here you can enter some text describing your download. Click 'add' in the bottom right corner once you are satisfied.
Choosing a file
Next, click 'add to main' again and 'add block' but this time click 'file' when the 'add block' page pops up (as below).
An 'add file' box will pop up. You need to select the file that you uploaded earlier by clicking 'choose file'.
After this, a file manager page will appear with numerous files listed. Click on the file that you uploaded earlier and a box with options will pop up. Click 'choose' from these options.
The 'add file' box will pop up again and your file will have been added. You need to choose a link text for your file and then click 'add' in the bottom right corner.
Once you have done this, you will need to take the page out of editing mode. Hover over 'editing' in the top left corner and click 'publish my edits'.
Once you have done this, your page is ready for your users to access and download the file.
Offering a free download in exchange for information
You may want to offer your users free content but only after they have filled in a survey or signed up to a mailing list. You can do this by reading over this part of the guide. First of all, you will need to create a sub page as detailed above. Once you have done this, you will need to edit it.
However, firstly you will need to create a subpage of your download page (the first subpage that you created). To do this, click 'edit' in the top left corner and then click 'add a sub page'.
After you have done this, choose a 'page type' from the suggestions as you did previously when you set up your download page.
Fill in the form in the pop up box as before but call it something different to your download page (Thanks / your reward). After completing the page, click 'add page' in the bottom right corner.
Once you have created the page, click 'add to main' > 'add block' and choose the file option from the list.
Add your file by following the 'choosing your file' instructions earlier in this guide. After you have done this, publish your edits.
Next go to your 'download' page that you created earlier (the first sub-page that you created).
You will need to edit this page. To do so, hover over 'edit' and click 'edit this page'.
Click 'add to main' > 'add block' and choose 'content' from the pop up box.
In the 'content' box that pops up, write something relevant. For example, if you are getting people to sign up for a mailing list in exchange for your free content, type something like:
Join our mailing list by filling in your details below. As a thank you, you will be directed to a page with our e-book on which you can download for free.
Click 'add' in the bottom right corner after you have filled in the content box.
Next, click 'add to main' again, 'add block' and this time choose 'form' from the list.
A box will pop up with several tabs. On the first tab, you are prompted to add fields. You can make this as complex or simple as you like. For the purposes of this guide, we are just adding a name and email address field but you can add whichever fields you like.
In the question box, type what you would like (we are putting name). In the 'answer type' box, choose an option from the dropdown (we are choosing text field). Next, choose whether this field needs to be filled in for the form to submit. After you have filled this in, click 'add question'. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the amount of fields for your form.
Next click on the 'options' tab and fill in the form. The options on the form are as follows:
Form Name - an appropriate name for your form.
Message to display when completed -This message will appear when the form has been submitted. We put 'thanks'.
Notify me by email when people submit this form - You can enable this feature by inputting an email address.
Solving a CAPTCHA Required to Post? - Select yes or no. CAPTCHAs are recommended if you think you may get high levels of spam.
Redirect to another page after form submission? - you will need to activate this feature. Click 'select page' and choose from the full sitemap. Select the subpage that you created (the one that you uploaded the file to). This will be located within the current page that you are editing (as below).
This isn't relevant in this case.
After you have filled in the form, click 'add' in the bottom right corner.
Next, publish your edits.
Your page should now look something like this.
Test out your form by filling it in and submitting. After doing this, it should take you straight to the file for download.
You can make this as complex or simple as you like. This is just one way of doing it. You can add extra text, long forms, polls, pictures etc. The possibilities are endless.
