How to sell a downloadable product on Prestashop
Do you want to sell an online only, downloadable product on Prestashop? If so, this is the guide for you.
This guide is for Prestashop version 1.6. For a shorter version of this guide describing how to sell a downloadable product on Prestashop 1.5, scroll down.
How to sell a downloadable product on Prestashop 1.6
First of all, log in to your Prestashop admin. Hover over the 'catalog' menu on the left and click on 'products'.
Add a new product
Next, click 'add new product' in the top right corner.
The 'new product' page will load. At the top of the page, there are three radio buttons – standard product, pack and virtual product. Click on the virtual product radio button.
Now you will need to fill in the rest of the form:
Name : name of your downloadable product i.e e-book, mp3 etc.
Reference Code : your internal reference code for this product (if you have one).
EAN-13 or JAN barcode / UPC barcode : the likelihood is that you won't have a barcode for a virtual product so you can leave this blank.
Enabled : leave enabled clicked to make sure that the product is active.
Visibility : you can choose from the dropdown. We recommend that you leave this at 'everywhere' to have the best visibility. However, if you want the product purchases to be restricted and exclusive, you could always set it as 'nowhere' and send potential customers the link.
Options : you will want all of the checkboxes to be ticked including the 'online only' one.
Condition : because you selected 'virtual product', you will not be able to edit this.
Short description : type in a short / summary description of your product.
Description : this is for your full product description.
Tags : you may add a tag for your product here, if you wish to.
Click 'save and stay' in the bottom right corner after filling all of this in. This is precautionary incase your computer crashes etc. You will still need to fill in the rest of the information in the other tabs. You may receive 'warnings' at the top of the page. Don't worry about this, it will be rectified once you have filled in the rest of the information.
Next, click on the 'prices' tab.
A form will load with the following fields:
Pre-tax wholesale price : it is unlikely that you would need to fill this in as you are selling a digital product. Leave as it is.
Pre- tax retail price : input the price of your product before tax.
Tax rule : choose your tax rule from the dropdown.
Retail tax with price : this will have been generated from the price and tax rule that you have input.
Unit price : this is for price per item if you are selling a pack of products.
Display the "on sale" icon on the product page, and in the text found within the product listing checkbox: this only needs to be ticked if your item is on sale.
Now, click 'save and stay' in the bottom right corner.
Next, click on the 'SEO' tab.
On this page, you can edit the meta title and meta description. Prestashop is being really useful here and has given you appropriate character limits for each one which will help with the search engines. A friendly url will be generated for you here, you can change this if you wish.
Click 'save and stay' in the bottom right corner.
Now you will need to click on the 'associations' tab.
On this page, you can choose which of the categories you would like to associate your product with. Choose your category from the 'default category' dropdown.
There is an 'accessories' field where you can choose other products from the site that you can associate as an accessory to your product. However, this is unlikely to affect a digital product.
You can choose a manufacturer if you have one. Again, this is probably not relevant for your download.
Click 'save and stay' in the bottom right.
The 'combinations' tab will be below the 'associations' tab. Ignore this as virtual products cannot have combinations.
Instead, click on the 'quantities' tab.
In the available quantities for sale section, input the number of downloads you would like to make available for this product. You can limit it if you want to keep it exclusive. You can also choose to accept or deny orders after the number of purchases have exceeded the 'stock level'. After you have filled in this information, click 'save and stay'.
In the form below this, you can choose whether you would like to set a mininum quantity of your product that the customer can buy to go through the checkout. We doubt that you would need to use this restriction with a digital product as there are no shipping price implications. Leave this as number 1 if you have no minimum quantity requirements.
Click 'save and stay' at the bottom of the page.
Next, click on the 'virtual product' tab.
A page will load asking 'does this product have an associated file?'. Click 'yes' if this is the case. A field will appear below with an 'add file' button. Click on this, browse your computer's files, choose your file and it will have been added to the product listing.
The filename will now be showing in the 'filename' field.
Other sections of the form to complete are:
Number of allowed downloads : If you would like to put a limit on the amount of times your product can be downloaded, type in an appropriate number. Set to 0 for unlimited.
Expiration date : enter an expiration date for your product or leave blank if you want to leave the product on your site indefinitely.
Number of days : you can input a number for the amount of days that your customers can access your file for. Set to '0' for unlimited access.
Click 'save and stay' in the bottom right corner.
Next, you will need to click on the 'Images' tab.
To add an image to your virtual product listing, you will need to click on the 'add files' button on the page that loads. Browse the files on your computer, choose the image that you require and then click 'upload files'.
You will get a green tick and a message stating the name of your image. Here, you can also add a caption for your picture or leave the default one which will be your product name. After you have done this, click 'save and stay' in the bottom right corner.
It is unlikely that you will use the 'features', 'customization', 'attachments' or 'suppliers' tabs for your downloadable product so for the purpose of this guide, we will miss these out. However, feel free to browse these to see if you may find them useful.
Now that you have successfully created your product, you can click 'preview' at the top to view it.
Your product should look something like this (depending on your theme).
Once you are accepting orders and a customer has gone through the checkout, they will receive an email like this.
Once the customer clicks on the download link, it will automatically start the download.
